a Celtic tradition since 1970
The Omaha Pipes and Drums have been thrilling audiences with their repertoire of traditional Scottish and Irish music since 1970. The Band is a registered non-profit 501.C3 teaching organization providing FREE highland bagpipe and drumming lessons. The Band offers scholarships to members and students to encourage participation in local, regional and national piping and drumming schools and workshops. The Band wears the Cameron of Erracht Tartan in honor of its founder, Tony Smith, who was a Cameron Cadet.
The 79th (Cameron of Erracht) Tartan is unique among Scottish Regiments owing to the fact that it was not derived from the 42nd Government (Black Watch) Tartan. It was created by taking the MacDonald sett, omitting three red lines, and imposing the gold line of clan Cameron.
The band performs for numerous service, military, civic, police, fire, and private functions. The Omaha Pipes and Drums is a member of the Midwest Pipe Band Association and is registered to compete in Grades 4. Throughout the year, the band competes in a number of regional competitions. In 2004, the Omaha Pipes and Drums competed in three games in Scotland; North Berwick, Bridge of Allan, and the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. The band finished in 6th place in Grade 4 at Bridge of Allan, 8th Place in Grade 4 at North Berwick, and 7th place in the qualifying rounds of Grade 4B at the World Pipe Band Championships. The band offset the cost of travel and lodging for the trip for each member. The Band brings in professional piping and drumming instructors annually to conduct FREE workshops for students and members. The band also outfits its members (as seen above) with the Band kilt, hose, flashes, sporran, belt, vest, Inverness (rain cape), and cap badge AT NO EXPENSE to the members. SO…If you have ever wanted to learn to play the great highland bagpipes or drums, talk to us, or better yet, stop by during a practice. We meet most Saturday mornings at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (84th & Pacific) with student lessons beginning at 9:00 am.
